Cardinal Candy Viburnum Shrub A special new selection with abundant glossy scarlet red fruit. Discovered in a batch of seed grown plants, after which a -25 degree cold spell killed off all other plants except Cardinal Candy. Tons of creamy white flowers cover this well branched, rounded plant in May.
There are many cultivars of the Viburnum Shrub. They range in height from about 4 feet to 15 feet and some provide great fall color.
Most provide a spring bloom of clusters of small white or pinkish white flowers that turn into lovely red, blue or black berries in late summer.
The flowers are often accompanied by a sweet fragrance that fills the garden with a wonderful aroma.
Plant viburnum's in any fertile, moderately moist, well-drained soil.
Most types have a reliable performance record in colder winter climates.
When the berries ripen in late fall, collect the seeds and plant them.
Take softwood cuttings in early summer.
Division of the shrubs should be in early spring, prior to new spring growth.

Fertilization techniques for the Viburnum are as follows:
Take a soil test to determine the PH of the soil. If one or more nutrients are low, use a specific fertilizer to bring up that level
Avoid fertilizing late in the growing season as application made during that time will force new growth and this new growth will not have sufficient time to harden off before the cold weather season.
