Rudbeckia - Black Eyed Susan

This is a large genus of the daisy family and it includes, annuals, biennials, and perennials.

They are great reseeders and often that is how they multiply in the typical garden as they tend to be annuals or biennials. The perennial cultivars tend to be somewhat short-lived.

They are usually native plants, very tough and drought tolerant. You will get long bloom times, stretching from midsummer to the first killing frost of fall.

Add Black Eyed Susan's to a wildflower meadow and you will have a spectacular show of color for many months in a very natural setting.

Rudbeckia - Propagation:

If you have the perennials cultivars you should divide the clumps in early spring or fall.

Start the biennials and annuals from seed

Rudbeckia - Uses in the Garden

Because of the long bloom period, number of blossoms and the bright colors, the Black Eyed Susan can be an anchor in your garden border.

With their rich colors of orange, yellow, red and bi-colored blooms, it gives the garden a colorful palate of flowers at a time when other flowers may be hard to come by.

Feel free to intersperse the Rudbeckia with shrubs, other perennials and annuals.

The perennials tend to be rather short-lived and you will usually will have to replace them every few years, but with the show of colors, it is well worth the extra work.

Dead-heading will improve the bloom time, number of blooms and site substantially.
