Coral Mu Shao Yao Peony: Violet-pink flowers about 10 cm (4") across, with white or pink filaments, bloom in May above grey-green leaves. Long known as P. corallina var. pubescens.
Sometimes treated as P. russoi, and sometimes spelled "russii;" named for the Sicilian botanist Father Joachim Russo of the Dominican monastery at Monte Cassino. Native to the Mediterranean region, mostly islands from Spain to western Greece.
Even though largely invisible, hidden underground most of the year, Peonies are quite spectacular when they emerge.
The fine purple leaves that eventually push through the soil and rapidly unfurling, turn green very rapidly. The foliage of the Peony is beautiful in its own right, but the best is yet to come.
Flowers are extremely showy and they come in three types: single, or semi-double and Japanese, with one row of petals and a large center.
Colors range from red, pink, white, magenta and even salmon
Plant peony tubers in the fall, 1 to 2 inches deep, in well prepared garden beds, with organic matter worked in.
Double Bloom 'Karl Rosenfield' Peony Plant: One HUGE Double Bloom 'Karl Rosenfield' Peony Plant in a one gallon pot with over a foot tall of greenery!!! These are awesome flowers that are great in any garden and are one of my favorite perennials.
Divide the root clumps of the Peony in midsummer, just after the blooms fade, and them may have a small bloom or tow the next year.
Be sure to have a minimum of three "eyes" (red sprouts) on each division you make to be successful.
In addition to their beauty, Peonies are very fragrant and extremely long lived. They are happily being planted in a permanent spot and not being touched for years. There is no need for division to keep a Peony happy.
Peonies require some extra attention to stay in top flower-producing mode.
Buy good sized plants as planting stock.
Planting holes for Peonies should be the size of a bushel basket. Mix in several shovel full's of well aged manure and mix well with the soil. Also throw in a cup of organic fertilizer.
Make sure the spot where the red sprouts emerge from the root is only an inch below the surface. If set deeper, the plant will struggle, and it may be many years before it blooms properly.
They like good air circulation between plants. Do not group them close together.
Full sun is preferred, but they will do well on the southeast side of a building.
Manure heaped over the plant every fall will keep it blooming profusely. A cup of organic fertilizer can be substituted for the manure.
Once peonies are planted, do not disturb them. They are happy to be left alone.

If you have established plants, they can benifit greatly from fertilization. Plan of fertilizing the small tree variety once every few years. Shrubs should be fertilized on a yearly basis.
Be sure to make a soil test to determine nutrient levels in the soil. Simply add the nutrient(s) that is low to bring the soil to ideal levels.
Remember High Nitrogen (N) fertilizers will promote green leafy growth at the expense of flower bud development.
Also, do not fertilize too late in the year. You will want to avoid a flush of new foliage that does not get a chance to harden off prior to the first frost.
