Monarda didyma 'Panorama Mix' Monarda are among our most favorite flowering plants. Plants grow to a height of 2-4 feet and are covered with blooms summer to early fall. Flowers produce a sweet nectar that is highly attractive to both hummingbirds and butterflies.

Prefers to be planted in full sun, but we have had luck with only morning sun as well. We send mixed colors of our choice that may include red, pink, purple and white. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, fragrant, deer resistant, good for cutting, for a rain garden.

Although, Bee Balms take a bit of work to keep under control, they are well worth the incredible flower bloom that they give you all summer long.

The attract all kinds of bees, hummingbirds and butterflies due to the minty scent and the tubular flowers.

It is best to plant Bee Balm in a controlled border where you can minimize the rampage this perennials can go on by sending out runners in all directions.

They need to be cut down each fall and for sure, you need to divide them every spring to keep them looking in top shape.

They are available in a multitude of colors including deep reds to dark pink, light pinks, lavender and white. Planting in groups of colored gives a particularly pleasant appearance.

Monarda - Propagation:

Divide the plant in the spring and keep you will keep the parent healthy and vigorous. Plant the divisions right as soon as possible.

You can also gather the seeds in the fall and plant them in the spring.

Monarda - Uses in the Garden

Bee Balm will soon get out of control if left unkept and untrimmed in the fall.

Bee Balm is very susceptible to mildew, so keep an eye on the plant and treat as necessary. There are some cultivars that are mildew resistant, such as Marshall's Delight and Jacob Cline.

Some cultivars are drought tolerant, but can rapidly become weedy too.


Monarda - Planting Tips:

Spacing: Space 18" - 36" apart when planting

Fertilizer: Use Osmacote Fertilizer and spread over surface of the ground once every 6 months. Use about 1/2 to 1 small handful, depending on size of plants.

Water/Soil Requirements: Once established, Monarda can withstand some dryer conditions. However, ideally the medium should receive moderate irrigation and even moisture distribution throughout the soil.

They perform best with a drip irrigation system.

Monarda, Cambridge Scarlet Monarda grow to a height of 2 feet and are covered with blooms during the summer. Produce a sweet nectar that is attractive to both hummingbirds and butterflies. Prefers full sun, but we have had luck with only morning sun as well. Zones 4-9.

Monarda - Varieties

Monarda 'Cambridge Scarlet': has leafy clumps of 3-foot square stems clothed with aromatic oval leaves. The terminal whorls of bright red two-lipped flowers are surrounded by brownish red bracts. Zones 3-9

Monarda 'Raspberry Wine': grows about 2-1/2 feet tall and is topped with rounded clusters of rose red two-lipped flowers that are surrounded by wine red bracts. Zones 3-9

Monarda 'Beauty of Cobham Monarda': Bushy clumps of purple-green leaves and pink flowers with purple bracts, appearing in terminal whorls. A favorite stopping place for hummingbirds.

Monarda didyma 'Violet Queen Bee Balm': Distinctive, violet flowers appearing in terminal whorls, and aromatic green leaves.

Monarda didyma 'Marshall's Delight Bee Balm': Aromatic, glossy green leaves and clear pink flowers in whorls.

Monarda 'Mahogany Bee Balm' Aromatic leaves and distinctive, wine-colored flowers, with brown-red bracts, appearing in terminal whorls.

Monarda didyma 'Twins Bee Balm': Distinctive, dark pink flowers appearing in terminal whorls, and aromatic, green leaves.

Monarda didyma 'Panorama Hybrids Monard':) Aromatic, green leaves and pink, scarlet or salmon flowers appearing in whorls.

Monarda didyma 'Squaw Bee Balm': Distinctive, clear red flowers in terminal whorls, and aromatic, green leaves.

Monarda - Companion Plants

Veronica:
Blue Charm veronica bears spikes of light blue flowers at the same time as bee balm. The habit and flower shape contrast well.

Aster :
Masses of small pale blue flowers appear in summer on heart-leaf aster and provide an airy contrast to bee balm.

Coneflower:
The large daisy flowers of purple coneflower mix well with those of bee balm especially in sunny wildflower gardens.

Evening primrose:
Blooming in summer, the clusters of yellow goblet flowers of common sundrops mix well with bee balm, especially the mahogany colored varieties.
