A beautiful red tetraploid with yellow center. Daylilies are most versatile plants, and will tolerate almost any location and zone.
Habitats and Possible Locations Woodland, Sunny Edge, Dappled Shade. Zone 3-9.
Daylilies are one of the easiest perennials that you can grow in your perennial garden. They are found growing in ditches, water courses and fields.
The Hemerocallis produces an incredible, delicate flower every day, while blooming, unlike the true lilies
The Hemerocallis has over 40 - 50,000 named hybrid cultivars, ranging from yellows to lavenders to red and every color in between.
There are also mini versions that produce smaller flowers and are more compact in shape and extended season bloomers too.
All in all the Hemerocallis is a great plant that will not let you down. Once you have it in the garden, it will be a centerpiece and you can build planting around it.
You will want to divide Hemerocallis in early sprint or late fall, which would be either before or after their blooming period.
Root the small proliferations called slips that develop on the stalks in summer.
Splitting the clump can be a bit of a challenge if the clump is quite large. The best way to this is with two garden forks placed back to back. Pry the clump apart to split it into two parts. Continue until you have the number of clumps you desire.
Hemerocallis can be started from seed too.
Hemerocallis - 'Ed Murray'' Daylily 'Ed Murray' (Hemerocallis) Grovitt, 1971 - This is a Siloam Hybrid, lemon yellow, with a burgundy center, 24-30" tall, blooms in early summer.
Daylilies are most versatile plants, and will tolerate almost any location and zone. Habitats and Possible Locations Woodland, Sunny Edge, Dappled Shade. Zone 3-9.
Most of the qualities of the old-time daylilies, which are vigor, hardiness and resistance to pests and disease have not been lost with the newer hybrids.
Although stated that there are problems with Deer, I can say that I have not had that problem. I have a lot of daylilies and a lot of Deer and have not ever had to treat the daylilies with Deer repellant. There is a different story with my Hosta though. :-)

The upright spikes of bright yellow flowers of The Rocket ligularia add vertical accent to the more horizontal clumps of daylilies and blend particularly well with red, orange, and yellow cultivars

Daylilies are classified as dormant, evergreen, or semi-evergreen. The dormant's are hardy and do well throughout the U.S.
Evergreens and semi-evergreens vary quite a bit for frost resistance. You will have to check your particular zone information against the hybrid you desire for that information.
For mass plantings consider the older, vigorous varieties that have proven their use in these situations. You will wind up with a "sea of color" by doing this.
