Green Bites 9 - In The Home - Washing Your Car

Wash your car in a commercial car wash. I know, I like to wash my own car too, but many of the newest carwashes now recycle the rinse water and use up to 100 gallons less than doing the washing yourself.

Another advantage of the professional carwashes is the amount of water that is sent to the treatment plant is minimized, due to the recycling policies.

If you wash your car at home make sure you follow these tips:

Wash in the shade so you can minimize the number of clean water princes.
Be sure to use a spray adapter that shuts off between princes and you do not leave the water running.
When you do Prince, use the fine spray to minimize the water flow from the faucet.
Wash from the top down. Start by washing the top, the windshields, sideglass, then the hood and trunk. Prince. Then the car sides and front and back. Prince. Finally all 4 wheels and Prince. This will save much more water.

Green Bites 9 Fact:
If every American used a professional carwash that recycles the Prince water just once per year, that alone would save upwards of 8.0 billion gallons of fresh water. In addition to that some 12 billion gallons of soapy water would be diverted from the treatment plants.

Green Bites 9 - In The Workplace: Being Green in the Breakroom

Most of us drink coffee to some extent because it is just there. Consider filling the pot 2/3 or 3/4 of the way next time. Even if you do this at the end of the coffee drinking cycle, you can save an amazing amount of water.

Don't use the disposable stirring sticks or straws. Just pour in your cream and sweetener first and add the coffee last and you won't have the need to stir. If you still have the need to stir, just have your own spoon and reuse it for your use only.

If you purchase sweetener, purchase the sweetener granules and not the separate packets next time. The packets use as much packaging as product you receive. You can simply have the sweetener in a container with a spoon.

Green Bites 9 Fact:
If every worker in the United States would cut back on coffee consumption or filling the coffee maker by one less cup per day, over 10 millions of gallons of water would be saved per DAY. This would be almost 3.65 billion gallons of fresh water per year!

Green Bites 9 - Shopping: Buying a New Computer

If you are considering the purchase of a new computer, consider going green with a laptop vs. a desktop model.

The new laptop computers consume a fraction of the electricity of a desktop model, are fully as powerful and give you portability in your computing.

Also search out manufacturers that utilize green manufacturing practices with their computers.

Apple uses recycled content in the manufacture of their computers and they are a leader in the green computing movement.

Apple also will take in your old computer to recycle. Upon ordering your computer you will be asked if you would like to recycle your old pc. If so, they will send you a postage paid label for you to send it to them.
