Green Bites 2- Use Recycled Content School Rulers - 70% Post consumer content

Green Bites 2: Plastic Rulers

Just about every kid goes through several plastic rulers for each school year - if they are anything like my kids anyway.

Look for Plastic Rulers that have 70% post consumer recycled content in them.

Kleen Earth® 12" Recycled Plastic Ruler Made from 70% post-consumer recycled plastic. Features double bevel with pencil groove and holes for use in three-ring binder. 1/16" scale on one side, metric on the other. 12" Long

Green Bites 2 Fact:
Save the trees. Most rulers are made from tree products. These recycled content plastic rulers help reduce landfill and save our forests.

Green Bites 2: Shaving Gel vs. Foam

If you insist on using some sort of shaving foam rather than relying on bar soap or body lotion/gel, consider using a saving gel in lieu of the foam.

Although the ozone depleting chemicals have been removed from the aerosol cans, the propellant still uses a petroleum based propellant to deliver the foam agent.

Not only do you rub this on your skin, we are needlessly depleting our oil reserves when there is a viable alternative - the gel foam.

Here are some links to some of our favorite Shaving Gels.

Green Bites 2 Fact:
If you buy foam gel in lieu of aerosol foam for your entire family you can save about 1/2 pound of petroleum substance per year.

Green Bites 2: Use Low VOC Finishes:

There are many alternatives now available for eco-friendly paint and finish products.

Where turpentine and lacquers were once used, there are water-based products that are now replacing many of them.

VOC which stands for Volatile Organic Compounds, are most often expelled during the drying process, which is most noticeable during and immediately after application.

With the low VOC or Zero VOC products flooding the market, not only are the homeowners living a healthier live as a result of this movement, the contractors installing the products have less job-related health issues.

Benjamin Moore, which in my opinion is one of the best paints out there, has there Aura line of paints.

Thanks to its revolutionary formulation, Aura’s VOC level is remarkably low — just 50 grams per liter, while federal regulations allow for up to 250 grams for flat and 380 grams for non-flat paint.

Green Living Made Easy has entire sections devoted to Low VOC and Zero VOC products. Just click on our Eco Friendly Paint links to take you there.

Green Bites 2: Landscape Mulch

Landscape Mulch. This is just about as organic as you can get in my estimation.

Organic mulch is made from wood scraps, fallen trees and a lot of pre consumer recyclable materials.

The benefits of using mulch are tremendous! Spread a 4" layer over your landscape bedding and you can realize the following benefits:

Reduced water consumption due to reduced evaporation.
Reduced weed growth. The weeds will have a much harder time growing through the coarse mulch than through normal soil.
Add soil amendments. The mulch will amend the soil by adding organic compounds to the soil, aerating the soil and building fertilizer levels.
