Gaillardia or Blanket Flower have showy long-stemmed flowers with blooms that resemble daisy flowers.
I feel that the Blanket Flower is a very worthwhile perennial to add to your border, not only because they are a very beautiful flower, but they also stay blooming viturally the entire summer, which is very rare for a perennial.
The blooms come is several varieties. There are singles, doubles and colors in various combinations of yellow, orange, and gold.
While the plants are typically quite hardy, this is probably one perennial that you will want to give a little extra protection in the really cold weather states.
The plant comes in standard varieties which are 15 - 36 in heights and the dwarf Blanket Flowers are only 6 to 8" tall.
Propagate by division, by stem cuttings taken in early summer, or by root cuttings taken in winter.
Sow seeds of annual Gaillardias indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost, or sow outdoors after last frost. Just press the seeds into the soil surface.
Plant 9-12" apart.
