White Ball Butterfly Bush - Buddleia Graceful gray-green foliage arches with flowers from summer into fall. The common name aptly describes this garden beauty. It does not wake up until late spring, but it?s worth the wait! Flowers form on current growth. Should be cut back to 12-18? each spring. Will quickly grow back with many flowering canes..
This deciduous shrub is called a Butterfly Bush for a very good reason. The Buddleia will drench the air with a very fruity scent, making it irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds.
The plant spikes have a beautiful and graceful arching habit that is very distinctive and is an especially appealing background plant because of its massive size.
In warmer climates butterfly bushes attain almost a tree-like status because of their size. They develop rugged looking trunks that produce peeling bark.
To have a mature butterfly bush survive harsh winters in the colder climates at the lower end of their USDA range, be sure to spread a generous layer of mulch over the plant's footprint prior to the first frost. This layer should be a minimum of inched thick.
In the colder climates the plants will die down during the winter, but will sprout back to life, first thing in the spring, soon growing into a sizable shrub.
Remove spent flower spikes to encourage new shoots and flower buds. Note: Butterfly bush can be an invasive pest in some areas; check local restrictions before planting it.
Sow seeds in spring at 66-75°F (19-24°C).
Can propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Semi-ripe cuttings are cuttings taken from semi-mature wood.
'Miss Ruby' Butterfly Bush-Buddleia This new butterfly bush is noted for its compact habit and remarkably vivid, rich pink blooms. The distinctive magenta flowers are more vibrant than any other buddleia variet.
Note that this flower is patented by "Proven Winners" and cannot be propagated.
Evergreen, semi-evergreen, and deciduous shrubs. Some are trees, climbers, and herbaceous perennials. Buddleia grows best in full sun with good ventilation.
All species, except climbers, work well in a mixed or shrub border. In frost prone areas, raise Buddleia in a cool greenhouse that has a minimum temperature of 35°F (2°C).
Be sure to plant the Buddleia in a prominent place for viewing from the house or garden bench or gazebo area as it will attract numerous amounts of butterflies and hummingbirds and the scent fills the air with a fruity smell.
Since the plant is a sizable specimen, with many varieties growing up to 15', it is best used as a background plant. However there are smaller varieties that only grow to about 5' that can be used elsewhere.
Buddleia 'Nanho Blue' A smaller compact variety of Buddleia, only 3'-5' tall at maturity. Deep Blue 4"-8" long flower spikes develop in mid summer and last until frost.

Plant in sun, 36 inches apart. In warm regions these can be planted immediately. In colder regions grow on a windowsill until spring arrives.
