Achillea is one of those hardy perennials that is so easy to grow. Just give it the sun it needs, and pay attention the to soil conditions and it is hard to get rid of this specimen.

What I love about the Achillea is it's ability to bloom all summer long and the stunning variety of colors gives you a lot of flexibility using this plant.

Achillea also has a fernlike appearance that brings a very fragrant smell to the landscape.

All Yarrows posses a common characteristic and that is being both deer and rabbit resistant. This is a great asset for those of us with these wildlife pest problems.

Achillea - Propagation:

Want to get more of Achillea in your garden? The Achillea is very receptive to division. Just pull out your sharp gardeners spade in early spring or fall and cut off a bit of the clump.

You can propagate by seed as well, but some varieties, especially the hybrid varieties will not come true from seeds.

Although they will self-seed quite easily, you should be vigilante in dead-heading achillea so they will not become pests or weedy.

Achillea - Appleblossom For two to three months in summer, these lightly fragrant blooms will draw butterflies to your garden. Flowers start white at the beginning of the season and mature to soft, apple blossom pink. Great for borders and rock gardens.

Achillea - Uses in the Garden

Achillea's tend to get out of control if you do not stay on top of them as they tend to get out of control.

They will give you great spots of color throughout your garden, are easy to grow and tolerate poor dry soil.

They do well in a naturalized garden or a container garden as well.

If you wish to produce cut flowers, wait until the heads are fully open (with pollen showing) before cutting. Cutting earlier will reduce vase life. Once cut, place immediately in clean water, and use a bactericide or biocide.

Yarrows are relatively easy to grow, requiring only routine maintenance and can thrive even in poor soil/watering conditions. They are great in the garden or as cut flowers or even dried for winter arrangements.

Yarrow - Companion Plants

Daylily:
The spiky leaves of daylily provide a dramatic contrast to the ferny foliage of yarrow. Both are tough plants for hot, sunny locations.

Penstemon:
Like yarrow, penstemon performs best in well-drained soil in a sunny location. The long spires of tubular beard tongue flowers pair nicely with the mounded form of yarrow.

Shasta Daisy:
Beautiful daisy flowers are great for summer bouquets. Also attractive in butterfly gardens or combined with other perennials such as iris, poppy, daylily or yarrow. Remove faded flowers down to the next visible bud to promote rebloom.

Salvia:
The deep blue and purple blooms of perennial salvia look great with gold, yellow, pink or apricot-colored yarrows.
